1. Mind cannot be controlled. Mind means thoughts, and controlling the mind is another thought itself, so controlling the mind will never succeed.
2. It can be slowed down by putting its attention on something else
3. Breathing is the easiest thing to focus on because it is always there, and there is no variation from one breath to the next; they are all the same. That way, by focusing on breathing, the mind cannot think of other objects, people, or situations.

So, yes, in the beginning, one may need help, and focusing on breathing is very helpful.

But, not forever.
Sooner or later, one has to rise higher and start asking, “Who is watching the breath?”
That way you rise into a higher dimension – the dimension of awareness.
Only the awareness (soul) can “control” the mind as it is higher than the mind.
In place of breathing, one can focus on their favorite God, or Sun, etc
But in the long run, you have to let them go.
Awareness is behind the mind and everything else – the physical world, your body, your breathing; they all are in front of the mind. They will never take you backward into the awareness; the mind knows only one direction – forward.
Awareness is behind everything, but nothing is behind the awareness.
That’s where the buck stops.
Try going behind the awareness with awareness, and you will find your true non-dual self.
