Mind means sanskaras (conditionings).
Mind without conditioning is no mind.
Freedom is to be free from conditioning.
You cannot purify the mind because at this moment, you are the mind, and the mind can never free itself from itself.
A bird cannot stay in a cage and declare itself to be free at the same time.
Mind itself is the cage.
All our desires are the pathways we have created to connect with Sansar, and these pathways exist in our minds.
In your life, you have to do something where your mind says yes, and you say no, or vice versa.
Only via such real-life experiments will you establish superiority over the mind.
They can be small things like exercising, avoiding unhealthy foods, etc.
That is deconditioning the mind.
This may seem small at first, but it can lay the foundation for future Samadhi.
Mahavir had trained his mind this way.
When he would go out begging, he would first create a condition.
“If I go in the streets and see a red house with a cow tied outside, then I will accept the food from that house.”
Many times, he would come back empty-handed because the conditions were not met.
This is how he broke his mind.
He said, “Temptations are always gonna be there in your life.
But there is a way to overcome the temptations.
Accept your temptation first.
Set your conditions, and follow them through.”
I had applied this message in my life.
Real-life application is the only way to succeed on the spiritual path, not just words.
Many years ago (before I was vegan), I was addicted to Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. 😂
Every day when I took rounds at the hospital, I would stop by the coffee shop and get one of the Reese’s and enjoy.
My mind always found a way to justify my desire.
I thought,” I work so hard, so I deserve some pleasures.”
It came to a point that the lady at the counter in the coffee shop would always keep the Reese’s ready as soon as I walked in.
Then I came across this quote from Mahavir.
I applied it in my life.
I accepted that I was addicted to Reese’s.
Reese’s was on the top, and I, an intelligent human being, was at the bottom.
I contemplated this well, and realized that Reese’s is full of sugar and butter; it can’t be healthy.
It should be consumed occasionally, not every day.
I took the word “occasionally” literally.
I decided I would eat them ON OCCASIONS.
That way, I did not deny it to my mind, but at the same time, this condition slowly started to uplift me.
In January, I wanted to eat a Reese’s, but I told my mind, “You will have it only on Valentine’s Day.”
And on February 14, I had three of them, and my stomach could not take it anymore.
February 15th, the game was over. Now I’d have to wait till Easter.
On Easter, I had two Reese’s
On Memorial Day, one.
And on July 4th, none, and then none forever.
Great souls like Mahavir continue to guide us after thousands of years.
Let’s not worship them, but follow them on a spiritual path; that’s the true worship.
Samadhi is meeting life face to face, which always happens in NOW.
Mind and its conditionings are all about the past or the future.
Mind is a vehicle we have perfected to escape the present.
Staying conditioned (in the past) and expecting Samadhi to happen are contradictory.
